Diocesan Arts Centre : Stage 1
The first stage of this project was completed early in 2017. It provides teaching and rehearsal facilities for drama, dance and music including large studios tailored to each activity and numerous smaller practice rooms for individual or group tuition. The design includes a dedicated orchestra rehearsal room with recording facilities adjacent, a choir rehearsal room and two dance studios with fully sprung timber floors. These premier rooms are suitable for small public performances. All studios open off a central, 3-storey high skylit atrium which provides breakout space for students and dynamic sense of space which unifies the building. The atrium will flow seamlessly into the main foyer of the second stage auditorium, yet to be built.
This building is located very close to the School’s historic chapel. The western elevation features a delicate metal screen intended to provide a neutral backdrop to enhance the chapel and minimise the bulk of the new building. This screen incorporates a delicate, laser-cut leaf pattern derived from the mature oak trees that are a feature of the school campus. On other elevations a crisp white brick has been used providing visual connection to the more traditional brick used on other school buildings.
